When the rain no longer comes as it should
For decades, African farmers have read the weather by instinct — a shift in the wind, a late flock of birds, the first rumble of rain in the distance. But today, those signs are harder to trust. Seasons are shorter. Rains come too late, too early, or not at all. For the small-scale farmer, this isn’t just climate change — it’s a daily gamble with survival.
Across Zambia and much of Sub-Saharan Africa, millions of smallholder farmers face the harsh reality of rising temperatures, unpredictable rainfall, and degraded soils. Yet, within this challenge lies an opportunity — to adapt, innovate, and build stronger, more sustainable farming systems through smart agriculture.
That’s where The Business Place Network Zambia (TBP) is making a difference: empowering farmers with the knowledge, tools, and networks to thrive in a changing climate.

From traditional to transformational farming
TBP’s Smart Agriculture and Climate Resilience Programme helps small-scale farmers move beyond survival farming — towards sustainable agribusiness. The approach combines training, mentorship, and digital technology to help farmers adapt to climate risks while improving productivity and income.
Farmers are trained in:
- Climate-smart agricultural practices, such as crop rotation, conservation tillage, and intercropping.
- Water harvesting and irrigation techniques to manage droughts and floods.
- Use of digital tools and weather apps for informed decision-making.
- Sustainable soil management and organic fertiliser production.
- Climate-risk adaptation planning, ensuring farming remains viable through uncertainty.
By blending traditional knowledge with modern techniques, TBP helps farmers understand that resilience isn’t about returning to the past — it’s about preparing for the future.
Simple innovations like drip irrigation improve water efficiency and boost yields.
The human side of climate adaptation
Behind every field of maize or cassava, there’s a story.
Like Misozi, a smallholder farmer from Central Province who joined TBP’s training on climate-smart practices. She learned how to plant drought-tolerant seed varieties, harvest rainwater, and use compost to restore soil fertility.
“Before the training, my yields were unpredictable,” she explains. “Now, even when the rains are late, my crops survive. I no longer fear the dry months.”
Her story mirrors thousands across rural Zambia — where knowledge and innovation are turning fear into foresight.
Data, digital tools and decision-making
Climate resilience is not only about techniques; it’s about information access. TBP partners with agri-tech platforms to connect farmers to real-time weather forecasts, market prices, and extension advice via SMS and WhatsApp.
By integrating digital literacy into training, TBP ensures that farmers — even in remote areas — can make data-informed decisions about when to plant, what to plant, and how to manage their resources efficiently.
Digital tools are helping farmers make informed decisions about planting, irrigation, and markets.
Why this matters for the continent
Agriculture employs nearly 60% of Africa’s population, yet it remains the most climate-vulnerable sector. If small-scale farmers are left without support, the ripple effects — food insecurity, migration, and poverty — will deepen.
TBP’s climate resilience work is not just about helping individual farmers. It’s about strengthening rural economies, ensuring that communities remain productive, self-reliant, and hopeful.
By equipping farmers with smart agricultural and adaptation skills, TBP is helping transform local agriculture into a driver of sustainable growth and climate action.
Partnership for progress
TBP calls on partners — from agribusinesses to NGOs, financial institutions, and government bodies — to invest in farmer-centred solutions. Together, we can create a support ecosystem where innovation meets inclusion.
When small-scale farmers are equipped to adapt, the entire continent grows stronger.
Collective learning and mentorship build stronger, more climate-resilient farming communities.
The future is green — and inclusive
Every seed planted with knowledge is a step towards resilience.
Every farmer who learns to adapt becomes a teacher to others.
Every village that embraces smart agriculture becomes a model for Africa’s future.
At TBP, we believe in empowering the hands that feed the nation — with tools, training, and trust.
Because when farmers grow smarter, Africa grows stronger.
